2

Apply for Financial Aid

Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible — it opens in October. Our school code is 011245. Review our Financial Aid & Scholarships information and stay in touch with the financial aid office so they have everything they need to process your aid.

What to do now

  • Review your Student Aid Report (SAR) when you receive it and follow the instructions carefully.
  • Complete the online counseling at StudentAid.gov.
  • Notify the financial aid office of any outside or private scholarship, Health Professions Scholarship Program, grant or other student aid you have received or expect to receive.
  • You do not need to complete loan applications at this time.

What happens next

  • Once you've submitted both deposits, the Financial Aid Office will email you instructions for the institutional application. Expect this in late March.
  • You'll be contacted again in May with further instructions, and every student gets one-on-one time to discuss their individual aid needs.

Optional forms

  • To allow us to discuss your financial aid with anyone else — spouse, parent, significant other — you must print, sign and return the Information Release Form. Without it on file, we can only speak with you.
  • If you have dependent care issues or special circumstances affecting your budget, forms are available on our website to request a budget adjustment.
3

Complete Your Matriculation Forms

Once your deposit is in, a few required items follow. Your acceptance communication and email will confirm exactly when each becomes available to you.

Background Investigation Notification & Authorization

All accepted students who plan to matriculate must read and acknowledge this notification. It becomes available after April 1 — once it opens, log in to My.WVSOM and complete it on your Application Status page.

Required Forms

After Your Second Deposit

  • Your WVSOM Student ID and email account will be issued. You'll need both for student health insurance and your Castle Branch account setup.
  • Instructions for the Castle Branch background check and immunization portal will be emailed to your WVSOM account.
  • Once your Castle Branch portal is set up, upload your Health & Technical Standards and Student Health Immunization Verification forms there. All WVSOM requirements must be uploaded to Castle Branch no later than one week prior to matriculation.
  • WVSOM requires all students to carry health insurance. You'll receive emailed instructions; students enrolled in the HSA plan can access their cards online at the end of June, and approved waiver students must upload their own insurance card to Castle Branch. Visit the HSAC website for details.

Questions about completing these forms? Contact Tamara Sharp at 304-647-6233. Need to request ADA or other accommodations? Email our accommodations office.

4

Get CPR Certified

You'll need a current CPR card when you arrive on campus for orientation, typically the last week in July.

WVSOM teaches American Heart Association Professional BLS at the end of your second year, so an AHA class is preferred. We will accept other classes as long as they include hands-on training — not internet-only — covering adults, children and infants, with AED training.

You don't need to send this to the Admissions Office. Just bring your card with you in July. Questions about this requirement? Contact Tamara Sharp at 304-647-6233.

5

Submit Your Final Transcripts

WVSOM must have official final transcripts from every college or university you've attended. Final transcripts should show no in-progress coursework and should reflect any degrees conferred. Transcripts already submitted and verified by AACOMAS are considered official and do not need to be resubmitted.

Any in-process coursework not verified through AACOMAS during the Academic Update Periods requires an official final transcript sent directly to WVSOM showing you completed the course.

Transcript Deadlines

If you are accepted

Transcripts are due

Prior to June 1

By June 15

June 1 – June 30

14 days after acceptance

July 1 – July 31

Prior to matriculation

Your registrar can send transcripts directly to WVSOM — electronically to admissions@osteo.wvsom.edu, or by mail to:

West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine
Admissions Office
400 Lee Street North
Lewisburg, WV 24901

All official final transcripts, required matriculation items and your My.WVSOM checklist must be complete before orientation. Additional details will be communicated by email.

6

Prepare for Medical School

Additional information about orientation preparation and suggested assignments will be coming your way. If you'd like guidance before you start, schedule an appointment with Dr. Aaron Phillips, Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Any student seeking guidance on the transition to medical school is encouraged to book time with him.

You can also review the Bookstore webpage for your book list and medical supply list. Always contact the Bookstore directly with questions before making purchases. And don't miss the Incoming Student FAQs — there's important information there for new students.

Questions along the way? Contact the Office of Student Affairs.

7

Celebrate at Convocation & White Coat

Each year, the WVSOM Convocation & White Coat Ceremony takes place during the first semester — the moment you put on the white coat you've worked so hard for. You'll receive an email once the date is set so you and your family can start planning.

The ceremony is held in our Student Center. Seating is typically limited to three guests per student, with overflow space in the Alumni Center where the ceremony is live streamed. It's also streamed online for guests who can't join us in person, and stays available online afterward.
