What is an AHEC?

There are five Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) operating within West Virginia, including the Southeastern AHEC, located at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

The West Virginia AHEC Centers seek to provide a seamless integration of rural undergraduate health professions training programs with graduate training prorams in primary care with rural underserved communities. AHEC graduate-level interdisciplinary team "block" rotations are available on a voluntary basis and deal with both clinical and community issues typical of rural primary care. Each AHEC works with local communities, preceptors, and faculty to develop their own contribution and expertise in community-based health professions training in West Virginia.
