SBL Students
SBL students tend to be traditionally oriented, preferring the time tested educational model of lectures and laboratories for the delivery of
curricular content.

Innovative curricular approaches are incorporated, including progressive disclosure clinical cases, standardized patients and human subject robot simulations, to provide an enhanced modern day educational experience for the student.

Rural Primary Care Medicine
Focus

The SBL Curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for the practice of medicine in any setting. However, the curriculum is tailored to the WVSOM's Institutional mission of providing primary care osteopathic physicians for practice in rural areas and to meet the special needs of the geriatric population. WVSOM's program has been nationally recognized in the areas of Rural Medicine, Primary Care and Family Practice.

Systems Based Learning (SBL) Track

Traditional Approach to Osteopathic Medical Education

Description of Systems Based Learning

The System Based Learning (SBL) program at WVSOM is a 21st century version of the traditional medical school curriculum that incorporates a variety of clinically oriented educational experiences. A core curriculum of medical basic science courses during the first year provides the foundation for the organ system based approach for which the curriculum is named.

The SBL Curriculum incorporates lectures, laboratories, small group activities and clinical experiences delivered in state of the art facilities by a dedicated faculty of clinicians and basic scientists. This curriculum prepares first and second year students with the knowledge and skills for third and fourth year clinical clerkships and national licensing exams.

These clinical courses include, Clinical Skills, Geriatrics, Osteopathic Principles and Practices, Pathology, Physician Skills, and Topics in Primary Care.

While all courses, including foundation basic science courses, incorporate clinical cases and osteopathic medical concepts, early clinical exposure is the capstone of the SBL Curriculum and includes shadowing experiences, hands on Men's and Women's health fairs, and a Faculty supervised, Student Osteopathic Clinic.
