Established in 1850, Wheeling Hospital was the first hospital in the Ohio Valley in operation between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, and one of the first hospitals in West Virginia. It was the first hospital in West Virginia to open Coronary and Intensive Care Units. In 1994 it became the first hospital in the northern panhandle to provide open heart surgery.
Wheeling hospital offers a Traditional Rotating Internship and a linked dually-accredited Family Practice Residency. 
Situated among the rolling hills along the Ohio River, the Family Practice Residency Program at Wheeling Hospital offers a comprehensive residency training program enhanced by beautiful environment with cultural and recreational opportunities. The program provides a nurturing, flexible education that prepares physicians to render quality family care.
The Family Health Center at Wheeling Hospital spans over 11,000 square feet providing patient exam rooms, procedure rooms, conference facilities, as well as office space for residents, faculty and support staff. The center also maintains a residency library with computer access and other technology.
