Greenbrier Valley Medical Center |
|
Located in the historic Greenbrier Valley, Greenbrier Valley Medical Center(GVMC) is a 122-bed acute-care medical/surgical hospital. This sole community provider is the third largest employer in the county and boasts a medical staff of 63 physicians who represent more than 20 specialties. Greenbrier Valley Medical Center has a strong volume and an interesting cross section of pathology. Lewisburg has been called an oasis in West Virginia because of its remarkable diversity, and cultural opportunities. Carnegie Hall attracts performers from around the world, and the area boasts a local theater well known for its quality performances and children's theater. The area has a dynamic public school system and two private schools. Outdoor recreational opportunities are abundant with some of the best river sports, snow skiing, spelunking, biking, and hiking in the nation. The internship and residency program at GVMC is located just minutes away from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Residents and Interns have access to the WVSOM library via the internet from the hospital or by going directly to WVSOM to utilize their on-site facilities. Our goal is to prepare qualified osteopathic physicians to more effectively enter osteopathic general family practice. We are devoted to the development of physicians who will further the integrity of the osteopathic profession, and strive to become qualified, future teachers of the profession. A traditional rotating internship and a family practice residency are offered, combining ambulatory and inpatient rotations. Interns who are chosen for our linked positions in Family Practice gain the benefit of following their patients throughout their training years,in our continuity clinic located at Robert C. Byrd Clinic. The number of training positions is limited to optimize one-on-one instruction. We have many preceptors who love to teach, and see this as an important medical mission. Particularly strong rotations include cardiology, internal medicine, surgery, anesthesia, family practice, and OMT. Didactics occur every Friday afternoon starting at noon. An additional 2-3 lunch lectures usually are held throughout the month. Topics covered include a comprehensive review of clinical medicine including surgery specialties, family medicine, internal medicine including specialties, pediatrics, pharmacology, obstetrics and gynecology, and inpatient case presentations. Opportunites exist to participate in medical staff committee presentations such as Tumor Board. Research opportunities are also available. Greenbrier Valley Medical Center has an on-going mission focused on expanding services and acquiring state-of-the-art technology to better serve communities across the Greenbrier Valley. In 2006 the hospital completed a $4.5M renovation project and is now in Phase II construction which includes an additional $9M expansion and restoration project. We invite you to be part of the excitement. Come see for yourself! |
