What is Research?Research is "scholarly or scientific investigation or inquiry." There are many different types of research; clinical, theoretical, biomedical, applied, literature-based. All share the common characteristic of being orderly, based on clear methodology and subject to test or challenge. Why is Research Required? The development of knowledge has long been recognized as an important aspect of the medical profession. In addition to gaining new insights into health and disease, research provides a means by which treatment and therapies can be rigorously tested. For the clinician who has a busy practice, understanding the tools and methodology of research are crucial to the ability to evaluate the onrush of new information. These skills are also valuable to diagnosis and the development of appropriate treatment programs. Research ObjectivesThe Research Requirements for interns and residents are outlined in the Basic Document for Postdoctoral Training issued by the AOA and the Basic Standards for Residency Training issued by each Specialty College affiliated with the AOA. Trainees are required to meet the requirements of their respective specialty college. It is recommended that the research project undertaken by the trainee to meet the requirements of the AOA and Specialty College also allow them to master these recommended standards:
All MSOPTI interns and residents are also required to complete the NIH's on-line research training module, Human Participant Protections Education for Research Teams, as a component of their postdoctoral training. The module shall be completed by September 1 of the intern or resident's first training year within the MSOPTI. Trainees shall document their completion of the course by printing the certificate of completion generated at the end of the course and turning it in to their medical education office. |
