The Mountain State OPTI office is located on the campus of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, West Virginia. WVSOM's mission is to educate primary care osteopathic physicians for rural communities in West Virginia and beyond. ![]() WVSOM is the central member of the Mountain State OPTI and is its academic center. Through a strong commitment to its students and to the region it serves, WVSOM tailors a quality osteopathic medical education program that prepares graduates for service in underserved areas and to meet the special health care needs of West Virginia's elderly. WVSOM, one of 23 osteopathic medical schools in the country today, is nationally recognized for its work in rural and family medicine. The college has been ranked as one of the nation's best medical schools by U.S. News & World Report magazine for eight straight years. The school has also placed in the rankings for primary care and family practice. The school's numerous awards on the state and national level serve as affirmation that WVSOM is succeeding in meeting the goals stated in its mission. In addition to the recognition from U.S. News magazine, WVSOM has also been named the #1 medical college in the world in terms of the percentage of its graduates that practice in rural areas. WVSOM is a partner in the West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnership, a nationally recognized program whose goal is to increase the number of primary care health professionals practicing in rural West Virginia, thereby improving the health status of West Virginia residents. WVSOM's picturesque campus is located in historic Lewisburg, West Virginia.
