WVSOM Library Services for Mountain State OPTI Members

The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine Library supports a medical education program along with the needs of the faculty, affiliated physicians and area allied health professionals. It has the materials, database resources, funding, and staff to adequately support reference services, Medline searching, and document delivery for affiliated post-graduate programs.

The WVSOM library works closely with the libraries or hospital resource centers at the sites affiliated with the Mountain State OPTI. If students cannot obtain the information they need from the library at their site, the WVSOM Library can assist with information, Medline searching and interlibrary loans.

The WVSOM Library homepage contains an electronic Library Card Catalog with an index to the holdings in the WVSOM library collection. If the item is available in the WVSOM collection, it can be sent to students, interns and residents free of charge. If a book or journal article is NOT owned by WVSOM, it must be ordered by "Inter-Library Loan" (ILL). Loans of journal articles carry a cost of $10-$12 per article. WVSOM will absorb this cost for the first 10 Inter-Library Loans placed for an individual, after which the student will be required to pay any charges. The student will be notified if they are about to exceed the limit.

Requests for information may be made by phone or email using the student's WVSOM email address (messages from free email services such may be interpreted as "spam" and may not reach their intended recipient). Materials can be sent to the student via mail, fax or email, depending on the length of the article and compatibility for email attachments. Most items are received within ten days, but Intern Library Loans may take longer.
