WVSOM Board of Governors Appoints Adelman as President

The Board of Governors of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) voted unanimously today to appoint Michael D. Adelman, D.O., J.D., as the institution's sixth President. 

"As an osteopathic physician, Dr. Adelman is uniquely qualified for this position," stated Rodney Fink, D.O., Board Chair. "We are pleased to have a President with such a broad and encompassing range of experience to lead this institution. Dr. Adelman is well known on the national, state and local levels for his proven leadership and business experience in the medical field."

Dr. Adelman has been serving as Acting President for the past nine months. He previously served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean at WVSOM since 2002. Prior to his appointment at WVSOM, he was the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM).

He was recently elected President of the West Virginia State Society of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Adelman served two years as the Chair of the Board of Deans of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM). He has also served on several councils and committees of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

In accepting the appointment, Dr. Adelman said, "I consider it a privilege and an honor and I am humbled by the opportunity to lead WVSOM. Dr. Adelman graduated from the Des Moines College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery followed by a residency in Proctology. He holds a degree from Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine and completed a residency in Podiatric Surgery. Dr. Adelman maintained a private practice prior to pursuing an academic medicine career. He received his law degree from the University of Toledo in 2004.

Dr. Adelman was in the first cohort of the AOA/OU-COM Health Policy Fellowship and served as the Chair of the Institute for National Health Policy and Research from 1996-1999. He lectures nationally on leadership, medical education issues as well as hospital and government regulations.

He also has more than forty years experience as a professional entertainer in magic and ventriloquism.
