The Clinical Education Program
The clinical education program is designed to prepare WVSOM students for the practice of primary care osteopathic medicine.
The basic program is designed not only to expose the student to high-tech, hospital-based medicine but to emphasize office-based, primary care practice and to enable graduates to be comfortable practicing in a rural community.
It also permits elective time sufficient to allow students to augment their training in specialty areas, and to successfully compete for internships.
Pre-Doctoral: Years 3 & 4
Years three and four of a students' medical education are often referred to as the "clinical years" because the majority of the learning takes place in clinical settings instead of in the classroom. Clinical settings include physician offices, health centers, medical centers, hospitals, etc.
Clinical sites are grouped in regional consortia (statewide campus sites) predominantly within the state of West Virginia.
Clinical Education Objectives
Clinical education is designed to accomplish three basic objectives:
- to provide intensive hospital-based training in the basic clinical disciplines;
- to consolidate clinical knowledge and skills and learn to use them in a family medicine setting; and to allow students, through electives,
- to augment their training in areas of medicine that are of special interest.
