Focus Area: Healthy People 2010 - Tobacco Use

  • Objective 27.1: Reduce the prevalence of cigarette smoking among youth and adults.
  • Objective 27.1d: Reduce the proportion of youth in grades 6-12 who report smoking in the previous month.
  • Objective 27.4: Increase to at least 80% the proportion of health care providers who routinely advise cessation and provide assistance and follow-up and document charts for all their tobacco-using patients.
  • Objective 27.7: Reduce smokeless tobacco use among adult men aged 18+ to 13% or lower.
  • Objective 27.8b: Reduce the proportion of young men in grades 9-12 who report smokeless tobacco use to 16% or lower.

The team planned and implemented a project to decrease the number of individuals that use tobacco through an awareness and educational program and provide tobacco cessation resource materials for health care providers and tobacco users within Nicholas County.

The team designed and presented an educational program entitled, "Kicking Your Butts: Smoking and Smokeless Tobacco Use and Cessation", on May 24, 2005 to 50 male employee of Georgia Pacific Lumber Company, located in Richwood, West Virginia. Resource and educational materials on tobacco cessation were distributed.

The team developed a "Tobacco Survey for Nicholas County High School", primarily targeting 10th and 11th grade students to assess tobacco use and provide resource information for students on tobacco cessation programs.

The team also provided a "Call to Action" letter along with information on free education and resource materials available to health care providers within Nicholas County for tobacco using patients.
