Since January 2004, there has been an increase of clinical incidence of substance abuse primarily among the youth population in Greenbrier County.

The AHEC Team researched and designed a program on substance abuse, called "Why Not?", mainly focusing on alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs. The program consists of two parts; an awareness and educational program for parents of teens and a prevention program targeting youth.

On May 26th & 27th, the program was presented to 58 7th graders, 55 8th graders, and 109 9th grade students at the Western Greenbrier Junior High School, and the presentation was given at the Greenbrier County Youth Camp to eighty 4-H youth members in June.

The "Why Not?" program and the accomplishments of the May 2004 AHEC Team will be presented at the West Virginia Rural Health Conference in October 2004. The implementation of the "Why Not?" substance abuse prevention program is anticipated to be continued through the efforts and support of V. Waid McMillion, D.O.
